AEW Rampage and Battle of the Belts V Jan 6, 2023

Time for a double bill of AEW with Rampage and Battle of the Belts V:

-Jon Moxley/Bryan Danielson vs. Top Flight-Generally hot and enjoyable opener with a nice showing by Top Flight hanging in there like they did and pushing the two veterans like they did. Some of their antics felt a bit too heelish but nothing too bad and it would be nice to have Top Flight start winning as they've dropped a couple now and might need some repair before much longer.

-Hangman Adam Page is cleared-So he's got the papers in order and is ready to go, whether it be in the parking lot or in the ring he'll be ready for battle. Nothing much else here.

-The Renegade Twins vs. Britt Baker and Jamie Hayter-A bit more competitive than expected with the Twins getting a chance to look good and Britt and Jamie using their experience to regain control. I can see something here if they get the Twins on board and going through the division in the future.

-House of Black calls out Eddie Kingston-Seems odd for Eddie to be the target but we'll see how this goes, I'll need more if I buy this reasoning or not.

-Sonico vs. Preston Vance-I'm not entirely sure if the mask-ripping and removal lasted longer than the actual match but to get over the newfound ruthlessness of the turn I buy this. Don't have much else on this, it didn't last that long.

-Mike Bennett confronts Darby Allin-A brief backstage bit from after Dynamite where The Kingdom arrives and challenges Darby about their accomplishments being perfect to qualify Mike for a title shot and Darby accepts since his open challenge is still ongoing. I would've been fine with that or the Henry interview, not both and especially not back to back as they didn't really add much to the other.

-Darby Allin vs. Mike Bennett-A decent enough match but no real shock of Darby losing so no real heat to this. Serviceable enough for a Rampage bout with the type of build it got but that's about it here as Mike put on enough to make Darby look good which is the point.

And on to Battle of the Belts:
-The Acclaimed vs. Jeff Jarrett and Jay Lethal-Another solid bout between these two teams following up Wednesday's solid outing, featuring some decent plunder spots and just enough involvement with the goons at ringside to have some slight doubts in the finish. That became immensely overbooked with the ref bump, Sanjay Dutt getting the ref shirt on, and the interactions with Audrey that seemingly got the match official over more than the belts that were on the line in the match. Hopefully, the conclusive double-win over the week means that we can truly move on from the bout as Jarrett has served his purpose and needs to be off my TV soon enough.

-Readings from the Book of Powerhouse Hobbs-A somewhat brief bit talking about how his background will inspire his teachings to his opponents.

-Eddie Kingston and Ortiz counter The House of Black-Yeah, I'm still not any clearer on how this is going which leads the feud to feel quite odd and awkward. Maybe a match might fix this but as of now, I'm a bit lost in this one.

-Skye Blue vs. Jade Cargill-It was a Jade Cargill match, nothing really much happened here. Jade has a great Pump Kick but she's slow, boring, and quite plodding in the ring leaving me to care less and less about her after the Nyla Rose interactions from several months ago. She really hasn't improved much and I'm more invested in how this bit of dissension with The Baddies is going to go down as I hope Kiera and Red can convince Leila to leave her and go on their own to cost Jade the title to anyone leading to a feud between them. That might give her something to do to kill some time and get better as I'm really losing interest in her.

-Orange Cassidy vs. Kip Sabian-I had some fun with this, the two work incredibly well together and the match was a lot more athletic and engaging than I expected. Kip's desperation and Penelope's interferences added enough distractions to put some drama on the line, Danhausen did his thing and the series of shenanigans with The Bunny, The Butcher and the Blade, and finally The Best Friends added a bit of chaos that matched the overbooking of the opening match. A decisive win for Cassidy to put this to rest and move on to someone else for his reign that has been quite fun so far and ends this on a high note.
