AEW Dynamite Jan 18, 2023

Moving along to the latest Dynamite:

-Orange Cassidy vs. Jay Lethal-A solid and generally fun time here even if it spent just as much time on ringside shenanigans with Jarrett and crew alongside Danhausen and the Best Friends interacting with each other and making for a rather distracting time. The in-ring stuff was fun and kept everything going through these wacky antics which surprisingly didn't include the stolen Golden Globe that I thought was the point of all this. The post-match stuff with the threats on Sanjay's job was a fine way to go about this continuation if they have to keep this going but at least the match was fine.

-Top Flight vs. The Young-Fun, high-energy affair that was really over-the-top and enjoyable. I actually liked The Bucks here who aren't usually that impressive to me in tag action but they looked great here with a team that could fly just like them. A nice long match that had plenty of close calls, near-falls, and just enough intrigue to keep guessing who'd win. Great stuff here.

-The Ass Boys want to talk with The Acclaimed-So after being humiliated, The Ass Boys want The Acclaimed to apologize which leads instead to a beatdown between the four that Billy breaks up threatening a round of family therapy for next week. A nice continuation of everything that's happened between everyone and sets the stage for a solid bout of shenanigans next week so I'm happy.

-Adam Page talks-A generally fun segment talking about what's gone on in the last week after their match and how that starts him on a path to redemption. Innocent enough, but that final bit involving the retracted comment is quite intriguing setting up something in the future I can't wait to see revealed.

-Ricky Hager vs. Jake Hager-Generally fine for what it is, offering enough of a showcase for both to get the point across involving Ricky having to pull out his tricks to overcome Hager as they worked quite nicely together. Overall fun stuff here with the distraction win and eventual escape into the crowd to survive the beatdown. Continues the feud nicely and keeps everyone strong going forward.

-The JAS want to end things-An irate Jericho challenges Starks and Andretti to a match with his team based on who wins a match on Rampage so it sets up some solid interpersonal antics between Garcia and Guevera while bringing up a match and a nice bit of feud continuation so it's all good stuff here.

-Bryan Danielson vs. Bandido-Phenomenal match here, tons of great spots and a nice story with the ability of both to keep up with each other as the final stages were really good as anyone could've won. Not much else here, just great fun.

-Saraya and Toni Storm conspire-The two talk backstage and have something to say about the originals that were in the company from the start which is interrupted by Hikaru who is told to stay in the back. This...was weird, as it seems to set up Toni and Saraya as potential heels when Hikaru was potentially set up as one based on the rejection choice from the big tag match last week which is an odd setup.

-MJF inspires Brian Cage-Setting up Bryan's next match in a pretty cool way with the slap angering him to the point of MJF wanting Cage to take it out on Bryan. I get the appeal but it'll be gone in a week, just save this bit for a pre-match promo next week so it'll have some impact.

-Toni Storm vs. Willow Nightengale-So the match itself is fine, but yeah this is set up all for that proposed heel turn I mentioned earlier which I get the theory behind but this has very little purpose. The idea is fine but it's all brought about at the expense of Shida's involvement who was perfectly set up to be the one to turn last week with the botched help in the big tag match after it seemed she was slighted so that makes sense. Now, Toni and Saraya are turning with the beatdown on Willow with the whole thing being based on the outsiders who came to the company after it started rather than the homegrown talent so the whole idea is solid but it's the weird way this is going about it as Ruby fits in with their side but is aligned with Willow after the streetfight so turning her does no good and makes their bond for nothing. It's all good from a match perspective and the overall point behind this switch so I have no issues with it.

-Stokely Hathaway challenges Jungle Boy-Nothing more than a brief bit announcing the match on Rampage.

-Konosuke Takeshita praises Danielson-A fun bit with him switching between English and Japanese getting the point across about his past match and how little respect for MJF he has following their previous encounter so nice to get a bit more about him.

-Darby Allin vs. Kushida-A rather fun match between these two who worked well together, had some great spots, and got a lot to like here as a result. I can see maybe one more match between them which is a nice thing to see as he once again takes a pounding and overcomes it all.
